Newly found, not new.   Parody by adult fans. Two films. No standard costumes, low level special effects, green screens. Some might find it funny, even though I did not. There are people who actually watch Saturday Night Live, and it's better than most of their skits. It combines bathroom jokes, ridicule for tough guy movies where the tough guy shoots everyone, and makes fun of Star Trek conventions, particularly ones that are arrogant. The second film is a take-off on Arena.

For Golden Age Fan Film Star Trek,

The most praised group of all the Star Trek Fan Film producers, Star Trek: Phase II (formerly Star Trek: New Voyages). Although each of their episodes have much to recommend them, you might start with "World Enough and Time" which is their third episode. [proposed section]Other Quick Picks: The following films are all very good, rated 4 or 4.5, but lack a single element that would move them up to a 5. That element might be poor quality sound or picture at places that don't interfere with viewing enjoyment, or a great, well-told story with no 'message'. [This section is proposed, not yet developed!]

I have only begun going through the comedies and parodies, and have not yet developed a system to rate them. However, I can strongly recommend the animated film, Stone Trek. Episode One, The Deadly Ears.

But, be Warned: I haven't watched most of the fan films myself.

I've sorted out websites that have films from ones that don't, and found films on You-Tube, Vimeo, and other video-hosting websites that have no websites of their own. I'm optimistic that much of what I've found but haven't watched yet is very good! However, know that I have removed a few films I have glanced at for sexual content. I have created a separate "Adults Only" website for Fan Films with explicit sex and violence. Links to that website, rather than links to those fan films, are in the appropriate places in this website. I'm trying to put links to every fan film which does not have that kind of problem which I can find below, organized in a useful way... I have put aside plans to review most films until a later time. If I do more reviews, I want to inform you about what's good to watch... what's good to skip.... and enough about why I think so so that if your taste differs from mine, you can watch what will make you happy. Where I've found easy to access reviews or review threads on the fan films, I've included them. Randy Hall of SciFiPulse has done many reviews of Star Trek Fan Films.

Rating System
I use a 6 point rating system. From best to worse, the rating system is:
5 - Excellent, wonderful -- as good as the best Star Trek made by anyone. It does well on all these: 1)Well written, 2) well acted, 3)enjoyable use of sets, background, CGI or other special effects, 4)entertaining, 5)well directed, 6)well edited, 7) it makes a point of some kind or explores an idea of political, scientific or social scientific interest... whether I agree or not, and 8) it provides a low level of suspension of disbelief beyond that required to watch and enjoy TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY. A 5 has all of these traits.
4 - Very Good, Entertaining, has 6 or 7 of the 8 points.
3 - Good to OK. It is a matter of taste. It has 4 or 5 points of 8. If you like Star Trek, it's probably worth a try.
2 - Not so good to watch. It has something going for it, but it only hits on 2 or 3 of the points, or is weak technically (see below). I recommend watching NovaScienceNow on PBS instead. Neil DeGrasse Tyson will give you The Cosmic Perspective. If it makes you feel better, he opened the show on August 18, 2009 wearing an TOS Starfleet captain's uniform...
1 - Hard to watch. It may have something good about it. Either it has just one or zero of the eight points, or it may just be technically so weak that it's hard to follow. but you'd be much better entertained by reruns of most made for television classroom lecture shows. Can I recommend "The Western Tradition," (http://www.learner.org/resources/series58.html) introduction to physics (http://www.learner.org/resources/series42.html) or a nice course in Algebra (http://www.learner.org/resources/series66.html) or Statistics(http://www.learner.org/resources/series65.html)?
"Really, Really Bad Stuff" or 0 - ... this stuff is worse than hard to watch. It's aggressively bad, and it has no redeeming qualities. These films are not given their own webpages, but are listed here: http://startrekreviewed.blogspot.com/2009/06/144.html . They do offer us one redeeming quality... they make us appreciate the serious but failed efforts that may be rated a 1 or a 2.

EXTRA CREDIT for just plain fun!
LOSE ONE POINT if the quality of the sound and video make watching it difficult, TWO POINTS if it's so bad it makes it hard to follow.
LOSE ONE POINT for including non-Star Trek science fiction or serious literary sources (e.g., it treats Hamlet as history, not a play) in the stories, TWO POINTS if the non-Star Trek materials are from fantasy or other non-reality based and non-Science Fiction sources (it includes magic, vampires, aliens who defy the laws of physics like Superman or Star Wars).

All rated fan films represent significant work. All rated fan films beat out watching meaningless trailers, teasers, credits for films that don't exist. Fan films websites listed under Blog 143 are effectively rated zero, as they have no product. But these websites can issue a single full episode and can go from zero to 5 in a day. This website is for viewers who want to watch fan films, not people who want to create them. Videos listed in Blog 144 are bad enough that my assertion that anything rated is better than just watching trailers and looking at banners is violated. The purpose of the ratings are to help the viewer not to degrade the creators, all of whom have clearly worked hard and lovingly.

FOR CREATORS OF FAN FILMS: I am trying to include the physical location of all fan film productions so that people who would like to be involved can contact a fan film in their own part of the world. That is also why I am including fan film websites with no product.

Overview of Fan Films

Some of the products of Star Trek alumni, Trekkers, and Trekkies are of stellar quality. Some are better than some of the authorized professional materials. I include "Of Gods and Men" (See Blog 24) as a fan film because it is unauthorized and associated with James Cawley, who is Fan Film's Jacob to Gene Roddenbury's Abraham in the Star Trek World. However, "Of Gods And Men" stars professional actors and is distinguished from professionally produced Star Trek only by the extreme of care and love so evidently put into the project... and the small production budget. Star Trek Phase II is produced by show business professionals, including James Cawley, who worked for Paramount on the later Star Trek series as a costumer, and who appears in both J.J. Abram's "Star Trek" and "Of Gods and Men." The production quality of Phase II films is obviously professional. Phase II has sold props to Paramount. Not yet released Phase II episodes star the Paramount JJ Abram's film's Spock double as Spock. (No $150 million budget, though). Some credit James Cawley with saving the Star Trek franchise. However, former cast members and James Cawley are not the only Star Trek professionals who has produced fan films. Starship Exeter (Blog 21) includes Paramount Star Trek alumni, and boasts stellar quality work as well. Star Trek: Beyond is also produced by industry professionals, and has a significant volume of output of fan films available for viewing. (see Blog 130).

I am in the process of assigning Fan Film Maker groups into one of three groups. (A) says they are Actively producing new Fan Films. (B) says that they may have something in the can they are working on releasing, but no serious plans for more after that. (B) alternatively would apply to a group which has plans but have let a lot of time elapse since their last film. A Group partway through a partially released film with more than one year between sections may also be given a (B) if they have no specific release date for their next section. (C) says the group has Completed all Star Trek Fan Films. It may still be producing prose, comics, audio shows, or other fan Trek, but it is done with films.

In some cases, all I have is a nation, a state or a province of origin, not a city, so many of the markers (e.g. in Germany) are not exact. They are (with the Exception of "Enterprise," "Titan", and "The Way Back") just somewhere in Germany. In many cases, I don't even have that yet. The map is a map of the world. You can move what you see in the window around with you mouse. You can then zoom in on your part of the world to see what, if any, fan films are made in your area. However, fan film groups in Blog 143 with a two-letter designation are believed to not be active.

The Original Series("TOS") and The Animated Series("TAS") and Star Trek XI, JJ Abrams Star Trek (JJA) will be referred to here as Golden Age Star Trek. Fan production set at the time of Golden Age Star Trek are fan film links and reviews start at Blog 20, with Phase II/New Voyages. (Roughly, 2250-2349 AD.)

Star Trek: The Next Generation("TNG") through late TNG Movies, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ("DS9") and Voyager("VOY") and shortly thereafter time line are here referred to as the "Silver Age" Star Trek. Silver Age fan production links and reviews star at Blog 70. (Roughly 2350-2449 AD.)

Fan productions set in the time of the last series, Enterprise, until Spock enters Star Fleet Academy will be referred to here as "Stone Age" Star Trek. Stone Age fan production links and reviews start at Blog 10,. (Roughly 2150-2249 AD.)

Some fan film productions are set 70 or more years after Voyager returns to Earth. Star Trek Beyond is set 160 years after Voyager. Clearly, this is not Silver Age Star Trek. I will call films set roughly from 70 to 270 years after Voyager returns to Earth Bronze Age Star Trek. Bronze Age fan productions links and reviews will start at Blog 130. (Roughly 2450-2649 AD.)

I was originally unsure how to handle fan films produced based on the J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot. I once proposed calling it "Iron Age" Star Trek or "Iron Pyrite Age" Star Trek. But that would not fit my 'time line' based system. I then realized that if I were going to differentiate between J.J. Abrams Star Trek and TOS, I also had to make a distinction between the original time line and Trek set in the Mirror Universe. Although I remain interested in suggestions about better ways to handle this, I am favoring calling it entirely by time line for overall classification. That doesn't foreclose refinements. ( TOS is Golden Age 195, Mirror Universe is Golden Age 196, J.J. Abrams is Golden Age 197? Gold has five known isotopes, 195-199, with 197 being atomically stable).

Most fan websites include only a few episodes, and have only one blog here to review them. However, Hidden Frontier is by far the largest website for fan produced Silver Age Trek. It is not created by entertainment industry professionals, although it is located in Southern California. In 2010, it stopped filming new Star Trek Fan Films, and starting producing audio Trek only. One final film will be released in 2011. It is also a website which has a clear political agenda, gay rights (or, as they must now be called in some states, "Takei rights."). It has completed an entire fan show series of 50 separate episodes, and has completed filming three new series as well as a non-Star Trek series, some of which continue as audio shows. I will note that the non-Star Trek materials exist, but will not review them. Hidden Frontier is in Blog 100 , but it's series are in Blogs 101 through, Blog 107. Voyages of The USS Angeles, a fan film series which forms the basis of the Hidden Frontier fan films, is at Blog 107. You can also listen to their new audio series which continues these adventures.

GoAnimate! Is a major website of an entirely different sort. They have created tools for easy animations to let anyone make animated Star Trek. They are at Blog 50, and significant users will each get their own Blog to follow.

Where to draw the line between major films or groups of small films which get their own blog and small groups of shorts or one-shot shorts that do not isn't perfectly clear. For the time being, that distinction is being made in a somewhat arbitrary manner.

This tribute to Trek and the beginnings of film tells a story which is part 20,000 leagues under the sea, part Perils of Pauline, and yes, part Star Trek, in black and white and in the style of early silent films. I have also included links to two genuine early silent films so that the reader can compare this recreation to the real thing. One, a Trip to the Moon, is said to include the first special effects, the second, The Great Train Robbery, the first to tell a story.

Blog 8, Stone Trek.  Comedy, animation. Several films, Star Trek in the animation style of the Flintstones, but no Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, Bam Bam or Pebbles in sight. The comedy style may be Flintstones, but these stories are 100 per cent Star Trek, or whatever other franchise is being satirized.

This is a remake of a Deep Space 9 Episode, but set in post-World War II Germany. It is not very 'Trek.' I'm not sure it belongs in this collection. It has apparently been included in an Israeli film festival on holocaust films. It raises the issue of how far away from Trek is a film before it's not a fan film. The connection here is explicit, but I am still not sure that this belongs on this website of Trek fan films. Comments below are welcome.

My own issues with this are simple. The value of discussing issues such as war, massacres, strife between species and peoples, in Sci Fi instead of in the real world are that it frees people from their personal involvement and allows them to look at such issues as abstractions. It also frees the writer of doing the hard work of serious research required of historical fiction. Setting a story in a real place limited the writer to reality. And that's how the trouble starts. A well written bit of sci fi can get past the overwhelming issues of harm and loss and bring the reader, or watcher, to issues of looking forward to a better tomorrow. So much of recent writing about Nazi Germany and its aftermath is wildly unrelated to historical reality. The Nazis were very proud that they were going to be the people who rid the world of Jews, and kept careful documentation of their extermination. That has not stopped Iran, and like nations from claiming it didn't happen. Likewise, many recent films have a fantasy notion of escape, or ability to rise above the situation in the camps without the individual compromising their integrity as copos or prostitutes. It is easy to forget the Nazi notion that the ideal man committed violence with no conscience or regret.

My family was not a victim of Nazi Germany, save the way every other American family was during World War II. Like all young men in the 1940s, my father fought in the war, as did my uncles, and my mother and aunts worked in the war factories. I have relatives, direct and by marriage, who were involved in the assault on Germany and who witnessed what occurred there when they entered upon liberation. And I grew up in New York, where many survivors of those camps settled after World War II. So, while in no way a victim, the distortions offend me. I have not yet watched this, so I cannot say if this is one of the bizarre flights of fancy or not. Having said all that, whether good or bad, this film falls squarely within my guidelines, and is therefore included in my collection unless and until I come up with a different defination of a fan film. I have not reviewed this film, and do not expect to review it for a long time. However, I consider it ready to be reviewed. Mr. Andrews has told me he may create an additional Star Trek Fan film, but I don't know if it would be on this order, or a more traditional fan film.

Mr. Andrews has been kind enough to say that the running time is almost exactly an hour, 59 minutes 42 seconds.

When I add up the You Tube Total I get a running time: 59 minutes, 45 Seconds. That includes 14 introductions and 14 sets of credits, so the actual film is clearly shorter.

I've watched the first five episodes. They were not released in order, but as 1, 2, 5,3,4. I think the strongest was 5. Strangely, I do't think 3 and 4 were nearly as good as 5. This is not a formal review, but if you only want to sample one of these, try 5.

The show is based on the TOS Season 1 episode that introduced the Romulans, "Balance of Terror." It follows Earth spaceship Captain Stiles, who is mentioned in "Balance of Terror" as being the ancestor of the TOS helmsman by the same last name. The actor who plays Captain Stiles in Romulan Wars is a heck of a lot better looking (his picture tops this webpage) than the actor in TOS. Captain Stiles commands the USS Yorktown. This show takes some cues from Enterprise, which is set in the same time period, but also offers it's own touches. I liked the acting of the core group. Really enjoyed the show. They seem a little unpolished, but not in a way that was out of character, more in a way that sold the characters.

Star Trek: Phase II

A TV show about "Central New York" (although I associate Phase II with Northeastern New York...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkeBbpgfVZQ&feature=share (19:48). Starts at roughly 4:38 and ends at roughly 18:01. It shows bits and pieces of shows which have been released, like Enemy: Starfleet, and shows that have not, like Kitumba and The Child. It also gives some commentary which enlightened me about why certain decisions were made in the making of some shows I had seen. If you've already watched all that Phase II has released, this might keep you warm in the roughly one year interval which typically passes between these releases.

This original pilot is not as technically proficient as their other episodes. It has a convoluted plot which, in many ways, doesn't quite work. Still, this episode would be the pride of many of the other fan film groups.

Rating: 2.5 or 3. This show introduces us to the new cast for TOS, but the story is convoluted, and not only because there are two sets of entirely unknown aliens who have undefined special powers but also because the main characters, particularly Kirk, act strangely. Kirk trusts an alien woman who has proven herself untrustworthy, and seems to know which of two aliens caused a problem without any evidence. The writer seems to want to grab the Q and the Borg and bring them, together, back into TOS. The sets are excellent, the acting is good, particularly considering how weak the script is. The editing is excellent, and the show holds our interest. The use of images from the TOS shows and movies recast with the new actors helps us in the transition, which, years later, was also made by Paramount.

EPISODE 1 - "IN HARM'S WAY"

This show is better written than "Come What May," and instead suffers from, if anything, a little too much realism. In fact, the repeated, similar problems the crew encounters, in which it takes a few tries to get it right, feels more like real life than like TV. Maybe just a little too much like real life. This show is also the beginning of Phase II/New Voyages signature, the use of aged original TOS actors in their films. The time jumping was hard to follow, but it was in keeping with the Star Trek pre-JJA use of timelines, even if it would have given Captain Janeway a headache. It was confusing, but coherent, the opposite of "Come What May." One of the elements of fan films which is commendable is how many, including this one, build on elements from past shows and movies, although the use of Doomsday Machine Wars seems to be a fan film theme which has been done a number of times by various groups. Given our current worry about nuclear proliferation, that is, perhaps, appropriate as well. I rate this episode a strong 3.5.

The show had a strong 'fun' factor, showing us the space shuttle in a typical one-car garage in a modest suburban home, and bringing us back to where TOS started, with a shot of the injured Pike waiting for his journey to the planet where his life will go on, if only as an illusion. It is more amaturish than Phase II/New Voyages later shows, but shows significant growth, too. Much of the plot seems to turn around trying to allow William Windom his return performance. The idea that the attack of the Doomsday Machines would cause the Klingon alliance to happen earlier is certainly believable. However, the show has the feeling of trying to just do too much. You feel their anxiety that this could be their last show, and they are trying to squeeze too much into it. As time goes on, the confidence of the Phase II team grows, and their product improves with their confidence.

EPISODE 2 - "TO SERVE ALL MY DAYS"

Rating: This is either a 4.5 or what I’ll call a 5i. I for Imaginary Story. There’s no such thing, of course, in the Trek Canon, (they are all equally imaginary) but I’m an old Superman fan, and when the folk at DC had a really great story to tell that would destroy their timeline, they told it anyway.... but told it as a “what if...” Story, a story that didn’t happen in their canon, but could have. If Star Trek had such a construct, this would clearly be a 5, but events happen in this story which would absolutely undermine the Trek canon, and Trek has no such construct, so I’m taking off half a point. Or, if you, too, are an old Superman fan, and you are comfortable with that construct, you can just consider this a 5 for an “imaginary story.”

Save for the problem set out above, this is the first of the Great Phase II episodes. The story is well written, well directed, well shot, well acted, the sound, sets, and special effects are better than TOS without disrupting our chain of thought. It is entertaining and well edited. I got so engrossed in the story that at times I was momentarily startled that the actor was a Phase II actor, not the original TOS actor... that it wasn’t a particularly good TOS episode I had somehow missed. Like the best of TNG, there are two stories which interact, one about people whose economy depend on war trying to foment it, an obvious swipe at Dick Cheney’s background as a war industry mogul a warrior with no real combat experience, as he did everything in his power (and he had a lot of power) to distort a real story (the attack by Al Quida out of Afghanistan, here represented by the Klingon attack on a small vessel) into an attack fueled by the much more powerful nation of Iraq, which in fact, was an enemy of Al Quida, not an ally of it. This is totally appropriate to Star Trek’s heritage, as a powerful political commentary, not quiet commentary, either. One only wishes this could have been run on real TV, instead of being part of Phase II’s 30 million downloads. (current estimates put this at over 100 million, but the 30 million was estimated a few years ago).

The Chekov story is also engrossing. What would we do if our lives were suddenly cut short, and would be handle it with grace and dignity? We see the stages of grief, well shown and well acted, as Chekov and his friend, Ambassador Rayna deal with issues of life and death as two good friends facing it together.

Fan Film Friday: Star Trek Phase II: To Serve All My Days [Revised]

EPISODE 3 - "WORLD ENOUGH AND TIME" Rating: 5

A truly great film. The writing, acting, directing, editing, and CGI are all there, and there is something particularly touching about this Trek remake of The Tempest, referenced heavily in the Episode. It's hard to sort out if it's the scientific consistency, absent in more recent Trek, the slower pace, which permits you to enjoy and bond with the characters, the original cast member, the touching daughter, the framing of it into the late TOS movie era... Of course, TOS never had the quality of CGI that this show has, but the charm of the show, as in TOS, turns on the human cost of scientific and survival issues in space.

EPISODE 4 - "BLOOD AND FIRE" Pt. 1

I have now watched both parts, and I may be the only fan of this series who waited for the final, good download of Part II to watch either part. I am not prepared to post a final review, but it was worth the wait. This series has its weaknesses, but it also has some strengths that blow away TOS. Among them was it's treatment of the overly discussed love scene between Peter Kirk and his gay intended, featured in the picture here. This was a love scene, not a sex scene, and it was far better done than any love scene in TOS between any two characters. I don't consider myself a big fan of either love scenes or gay story lines, but this was a human story line. Although Cawley seemed to be overdoing Kirk's peculiarities, there turned out to be reasons he was doing it. I've read a lot of complaints about this double-length story, but for the most part, it's a wonderful watching experience. I haven't done the full analysis, and don't yet know it it will be rated a 4, a 4.5, or a 5, but it's clearly excellent and worth your time.

Rating: 5 In sharp contrast to ' vignettes' I've seen at other websites, this one tells a short and interesting story with a seat-of-your-pants moment as well as introducing a character. It's well written, well directed, well acted. The cgi work is very good, the always welcome excellent Phase II sets are as welcome and excellent as always, it's entertaining, well edited, and consistent with physics. Time: 5 minutes, 46 seconds.

The show NBC probably wished they were buying when they bought TOS. One complete episode ready for viewing.

Captain John Quincy Garrovick serves the Exeter, a starship the same class as the Enterprise in TOS. His crew are fresh recruits out of the academy. His bridge crew includes an Andorian, Lt. B'Fuselek, security officer Cutty, and his science officer and No. 1, Jo Harris.

This show is shot in a real set that closely resembles TOS set, and the actors can act. The story is more about facing meaningless hostiles than a typical TOS episodes. This may be the show NBC thought they were getting when they purchased TOS, except that, like the original pilot, the second in command is a woman... but not a very young one, an Englishwoman, Jo Harris. And unlike the original pilot, Jo Harris is a science officer, and isn't chafing or uncertain about her position. And her captain is even less uncertain of her than she is. It's a little clue that this show wasn't really made in the mid 1960s. Compare this to "Stories of the Century" with Matt Clark, Railroad Detective, a 1950s cowboy detective show with a very competent female detective. Like the old comic says, the female detective "gets no respect." The level of comfort of the white and black actors with one another is a second clue.

Aside from the role of blacks and women, it really does have the feel of a 1950s cowboy show. Good guys, bad guys. 1960s NBC would have run Eugene Roddenbury over trying to get this show instead if it had been available.

The Andorians have dropped out of communication when the Lexington, another starship, headed there, the only source of medicine to cure their crew. The Exeter is sent to investigate.

The Andorians, we learn, live underground to avoid disturbing nature on the surface of their planet. A rebel element has allied with the Klingons.

There are sets for the surface, as well as park scenes. The quality of production is similar to TOS. Fighting also includes all the elements. Parts of halls collapse, phasers, fistfights... right down to the ribbing jokes aimed at the Andorian crew member, which might have been slightly overdone.

A good show, well worth your time. On a scale of 1 to 5, this show scores a 5. Good quality fun. The exploration of ideas is sci fi, not social, but they explore how a civilization of insect like creatures might see their world.

The second, and only other episode is not finished. Since they released a teaser more than five years ago, and released the next to last section more than three years ago, one can conclude they are taking their time releasing that final section. What's more, the website makes it unclear that this show is not complete, and ready to watch, and as such is misleading.

The hostile reptilian aliens, the Tressaurians, have attacked before... a ship on which our Captain John Quincy Garrovick served as a cadet. They've killed HIS old captain. Our old friends, the Tholians, have created some kind of device the less intelligent reptilian Tressaurians have stolen. Clearly, written by anti-reptile bigots... seriously, though, there's no message here, just action. People sneer at each other, they fight, they win and lose. It's a nice sci-fi story, dangerous devices, fun and Trek-like. But they haven't released the ending. So I recommend you wait now to watch it, because once you start it, you'll want to watch it through to the end.

Other reviews: Ordinarily, I link to review threads about the episodes. However, given the lack of activity in the Starship Exeter Forums, and the time since The Savage Empire was released, I have not found the appropriate thread with other people's reviews on it. However, since my own review is a rave, I don't feel bad about it.

Among the people involved with Starship Exeter are Dennis Bailey, who wrote two episodes of TNG, the amazing "Tin Man" and the episode (not the movie) "First Contact."

A new Fan film, Starship Ajax, out of Oklahoma City, Ok (listed here: http://startrekreviewed.blogspot.com/2009/06/143.html (AB)) had acquired the Exeter bridge set and issued a call for assistance on Dec. 27, 2010. However, On Dec. 17, 2011, it became evident that there were major issues tearing this group apart, and I am therefore moving them to short term hold status, pending whether they regroup and continue or if the effort falls apart.

This was their message in Dec. 2010:
We are looking for volunteers to assist in restoration work on the Exeter bridge set and construction of additional set pieces to complete it. As well we are also needing volunteers to do carpentry work in new set construction for the corridors and briefing room and other needed sets for the Ajax production. Electrical knowledge is also desired since we need to rewire the bridge for the display and switch lighting.

Much Thanks to anyone even remotely interested. Based off recommendations I get we may set up a monthly work weekend at the hanger in restoration and additional set building. Suggested dates would be welcome.

Captain Carter commands the Starship Farragut. Convincing casting, with a crew that's attractive, without making every female a young knockout. Better than most of the professional shows. The use of New Voyagers aka Phase II's sets add a lot to this show. Throw out a 'Thank you' to James Cawley... again. Some people have confused the fact that Captain Carter is not the ideal commanding officer with bad acting. I don't understand this show that way. Carter is just a bit more like your real boss and less like the boss you wish you had than most Starfleet Captains. That's not bad acting, that's good characterization.

A discussion: Starship Farragut

"The Captaincy" Rating: 5
Excellent acting, casting, cgi, writing, sets. This is a well planned and well executed show. The special effects are superior to TOS, but then, most people today have more computing power on their desks than NASA had in their whole operation when they sent Apollo 11 to the moon. The bottom line is, though, they make it count. They make the creation of an entire Klingon language by fandom count. They use it all with grace, and to good effect. Even the camera work is excellent. There are inventive shots giving you perspective more akin to movie than TV work.

Beautiful shots of the earth-like (Class M) planet. Nicely done, a bit more water:land ratio than earth.

A neat Sci-Fi idea is explored. The effects of a visual shield on the area hidden is shown with a color shift. However the primary focus is on getting to know the crew. Acting is off the charts. Editing is perfect.

The addition of Cawley's Kirk and Enterprise just adds another tweak to a great show. I loved this.

"For Want of a Nail" Rating: 4

Another work that is so good you can't believe they aren't stopping for commercials. Well, you can, because TV shows have to be put together in a week, and this is clearly thought out better than that. On a peaceful mission, two technologies interact, with destructive results.

America is full of people whose idea of a good time is reinacting something. For Trekkies, it's variations on their favorite TV show. For others, it's often history. The crew takes good advantage of the near-cult status of reinactment groups in this episode.

Curiously, they introduce the idea that the Federation's understanding of the time line is incomplete, and the comments could act as an opening for some of that happens in J.J.Abram's Star Trek. Also nice, that the planet which is at first introduced as more advanced than the Federation is gradually shown to be lacking in certain things, and that their contact has it's own purposes. Beyond that, it's the old fix-the-time line problem. There's also a bit of a breakdown in the acting toward the end of the episode. The characters are preaching at one another, but don't sound convinced themselves. They certainly don't have the usual level of steller acting perfection this cast has shown itself capable of. The editing, perfection until the second half of this episode, also weakens. It's just gets too long. In the end, though, the surprise twist ending does a lot to redeem the show. Rating: 4

There is a short called, "A Rock and A Hard Place". (17 minutes) Rating: 4. This is a completely enjoyable show, well written, acted, tightly edited, directed, great CGI. Although much of the show is about a fight, the reason for which is unclear (the Klingons surely realize that there is a Federation ship above. Why would they attack rather than remain hidden? There is an difference between honor and stupidity.), the short length of the show doesn't leave you with enough time to raise this kind of question. Captain Carter, overruling the objections of Commander Smithfield, and Dr. Bishop, and old flame from his days as a student, go down to a planet not visited in 10 years to collect rocks. The CGI of the outside and inside of the Farragut shuttlebay and shuttle are fabulous. They spot high concentrations of dilithium, and head from that location. The sky has flashes of lights crossing it as they land in what, otherwise, is a very earth-like planet. They gather dilithium, and record high amounts of other rare minerals in a beautiful woods near a stream. They are being watched by a Klingon, who reports them to his commander. He watches as the day takes a romantic turn. The Klingon tries to sneak up on them, but Carter slips his hand over to his phaser and stuns him first, then destroys the Klingon's phaser gun with a higher phaser setting. When the Klingon won't answer Carter's questions, he guesses that it's a small party. Carter can't contact the ship because his signal is jammed, so he stuns him heavily and he and Dr. Bishop. head for the shuttle. But they are attacked by another Klingon before they get to it. Carter and the Klingon manage to disarm each other, but Dr. Bishop goes after a discarded Phaser which has fallen down a ravine. Carter unsuccessfully thrown the Klingon's knife at him, then runs. The Klingon chases, then throws the knife at Carter, getting him in the back. Carter pretends to be hurt worse than he is, and when the Klingon comes in to retrieve his knife and finish the job, Carter gets the advantage. However, just as the Dr, Bishop, phaser in hand, climbs out of the ravine, the other Klingon arrives and takes the phaser and pushes her back down. He tries to use the phaser on Carter in the fight, but Dr. Bishop hits him with a rock, and she regains the phaser and instead shoots it at Carter's other Klingon, who vaporizes. They make it back to the Shuttle, with Carter acknowledging that Smithfield won't let him live it down.

The next episode being planning was "The Potemkin Passthrough." in early 2009. However in Sept. 2010, they announced that the next episode would be "The Price of Anything." They describe it as their most ambitious film to date. In addition, they are almost finished with their new bridge set (they had been using Phase II's bridge set). These look a lot like the film produced by Curt Danhauser's Guide to Animated Star Trek, which has it's own TOS animated fan film, discussed in Blog 9. Without giving them a full review, I would say the stories are better than the TAS stories I have seen so far. I am putting off reviewing these until I can watch the entire TAS series.

Rating: 3 This animated episode starts slow but ends strongly. The animation form makes the meeting scenes very dull, since these scenes are generally carried by acting, and actors are limited to voice here. So they are too long, and while we understand the writers are driving home how close our characters are to the captain of the other vessel, a single line of dialogue would have done the job, it wasn’t needed to repeat it in two scenes.

The story takes note of the difficulty of fighting in a situation that your opponent is a friend, which is always a good topic. The writing is interesting, but needed more editing. The medium limits the acting to voice acting, and eliminates the need for sets and special effects. The second half of it is entertaining, and I’m unclear how to evaluate direction in a cartoon. It is lacking in editing in the beginning, but that improves in the end.

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men is a 40th Anniversary tribute to the entire franchise including many cast members from The Original Series as well as a few from Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and a couple of characters from Generations, which included the crew of The Next Generation cast, and one from Enterprise. It also includes the star of Star Trek Phase II, James Cawley, who worked on The Next Generation behind the scenes. The website contains a single feature-length film in three parts.

It could as easily have been titled "The Wrath of Charlie X." It bookends The Original Series with the Movie Generations.

Good watching.

The writing, acting, and production quality are all professional, if inexpensive. It builds on concepts and ideas that begged to be returned to in prior Treks, but never were. I think it would be a fine first fan film, and anyone could enjoy it. Nevertheless, it is probably a production best appreciated by fans because of how much it draws on from past TV shows and films, bringing things together in ways that make sense. These two characters HAD to meet... they never did.

It reminds us that some of the shows greatest fans were it's actors. I particularly appreciated the scenes where an aged Uhura and a young Tuvok speak. Nichelle Nichols famously wanted to quit Star Trek, and no less a figure than the Rev. Martin Luthur King, Jr. kept her with the show. Whenever people accuse Barak Obama of being a Vulcan, I think of Tim Russ. I refer to Obama as "Tuvok Obama" in my review of Star Trek XI (See Blog 211). This film left me with a renewed sense of gratitude to both the fanatics who keep this show alive and the cast members who cooperate.

Tales of the 7th Fleet

Episode 1, Return to Doomsday, 17 minutes.
Rating: 2.5. The writing is fair. The ideas are quite good, but not very well executed. The outline of the episode was clearly very good. The acting is weaker than the writing. However, the costumes are good. The green screens are used pretty well, but the bridge is made to look too large for the size of the crew. Also, I noticed that they had one person (Edward Tunnis III) playing two parts. That was distracting. I was wondering, in fact, if they were twins or what was up with that. Reminded me of kids making zero budget Trek in their basements. It’s mildly entertaining, decently directed and edited. It makes no point. It’s level of disbelief, aside from the general production weaknesses, are not greater than in regular Star Trek. I liked their use of the Doomsday machine much better, than in almost any other fan Trek I’ve seen, and the Doomsday Machine seems to be a Fan Trek favorite. These folk understand the idea of an imaginary universe having rules and limits, and they comply fully with them on all parameters.

Episode 2 – Upgrade Time: 30:33 Rating: 3.0 A big improvement over the prior episode in acting and in writing, but not in concept. The story moved along much better. The use of sets and backgrounds is also marginally better. It is significantly more entertaining. The directing is better, and it has the feel of being better edited. There may be a point to the story once the issues left open at the end of the story are closed, and the issues discussed of genetic engineering skirt a point, but I don’t see a point social, political or scientific at this time, so I am not assuming that will emerge in my evaluation..

Episode 3, A Touch of Home. Rating: a strong 3.0 or weak 3.5. The story is consistent and moves along. I like it that this is not supposed to be the leading ship in the fleet, and the officers and workers are not as super competent as on the Enterprise. In both Episodes 2 and 3 they also only accomplish part of their task. The acting is sticky. It’s not that they aren’t into their parts, they just all seem too awkward too much of the time. The CGI is obvious green screen. However, the rudimentary ship CGI and green screens do the job. The show is more entertaining and better directed than the prior two, showing growth. It is also well edited. I’m not clear that it makes any points, aside from just those it takes to drive the story.

Summary and spoilers:

Episode 1 “RETURN TO DOOMSDAY”
Opening has a ship with a single nacelle and a Unity type space station. Then we see something that looks a lot like a transistor from the 1950s but with a cap on one side.

The title, “Return to Doomsday.” New Captain to the USS Justice gives us a voice over. He is joining a ship with a crew that has served together for a long time under a prior captain.

Starfleet members appear older than typical Starfleet personal. TOS Movie era.. There is a woman who appears to be one of Harry Mudd’s androids. She is overweight, and called ‘Enigma’. They receive information and notice the Doomsday machine is ‘moving.’

Opening Credits Roll, music is not Standard Trek, but I like it:

One crew member (science officer?) reports the heading of the Doomsday machine, the android reports subspace interference. Captain wants to ask Starfleet Control for instructions. The science officer (I know he’s the science officer from his function and from watching the rest of this series) objects that it took two Constitution Class Starships to stop it before. The android reports that Starfleet Command is sending another starship to help them stop it. For now, they are to follow and observe the device. It will take six days for the other starship to get there. They launch a “Class 5 probe.” Science officer reports it will be 15 minutes until optimum sensor range.

A crewman complains he has to fix the food machine for desserts. The woman he speaks to
(who I take to be the ship’s doctor) kids with him about bedside manner.

The ship travels through space. Enigma reports increasing subspace interference will result in a loss of communications with Starfleet Command in 4.5 minutes. The science officer reports the device is headed for the Klingon Neutral Zone and will cross it in approx. 47 hours. Another officer has no problem with that. Captain asks if it will pass any inhabited systems, and the science officer says, with a concerned tone, “negative.” Captain asks if it’s functional, science officer says it’s hard to tell, the hull is made of solid “Tr..” whatever, he doesn’t say Neutronium, which is what the original Doomsday machine was made of. Captain calls a meeting of the senior staff and gives the navigator the com.

Interestingly, the ship is shown passing through space, looking pretty dark. That’s more realistic than the standard way used in Trek. Nice.

At the meeting, the senior officers throw out and shoot down ideas of how to stop it. Enigma points out it is not endangering any inhabited systems and headed out of Federation Territory. The Captain is concerned that the Klingons will hold them responsible for what it does once it enters Klingon space. They agree they have to stop it first. Since the Starfleet assist vessel will take longer to reach them than the Doomsday machine will take to leave, they can’t wait for it. However, this is not mentioned in the dialogue.

Two officers chat in the hall. It’s hard to make out what they are saying. Something about ‘chief engineer.’ And that the captain wants him to fix problems ahead of the confrontation.

Enigma announces that subspace interference is now too great for long range communications. Captain asks helm for range to target, “220 gigameters” (My note: kilo 1000, mega 1 million, giga 1 billion, so that’s 220 million kilometers. Light travels 300,000 Km/sec... roughly 12 light minutes. Earth is 8 light minutes from the sun.) They discuss photon torpedoes and phaser. The captain says he has 14 minutes to lock phaser onto target. They are, it would appear, traveling at sublight speed, but barely.

A moment in sick bay in which an engineer is being fixed up. Somebody else in the engineering group is Identified by the doctor as having prevented a warp core explosion on another ship.

Phaser cause no damage to the outside of the Doomsday Machine. The machine, however, turns and changes heading. Captain asks about damage, Enigma reports minimal damage. They are in torpedo range, and fire their torpedoes. First shot does little but get a response. The ship shakes ,the helmsman is out cold The captain tries again with maximum warheads. Science officer reports, “No effect.” There is something which shakes the ship again and the colors get funny.

We now see the Engineer. He is asked if he’s rigged the warp core for detonation. He agrees to ‘take care of it.’ Captain and Commander Stein have been injured, and the Doctor has been called to care for them. Science officer is now in command of the Justice. Enigma, the android, notes that the chief engineer is next in the chain of command, but the Science officer comments he is more familiar with the vessel. Enigma threatens to lock out all command functions if he doesn’t surrender command to the Engineer, so the Science officer complies. When the chief engineer appears, he refuses to surrender control to the Science officer, and takes command.

The Doctor isn’t getting proper power and is not happy to find out the engineer is at the bridge. Captain, delirious, demands they explode the ship inside the Doomsday Machine. Engineer explains that, due to malfunctions in their warp core, they don’t have enough power to knock it out even if they do explode the ship inside the machine.

They decide they could get that much power by causing a solar flare with a spread of photon torpedoes. They discuss how to do that. They move in toward the sun past the safety zone, past the hull tolerance limits. The Doomsday Machine follows them. They fire at the sun, resulting in a huge solar flare half the height of the sun, but impossibly fast. There is an explosion. The ship shakes. The science officer identifies it as an EM pulse which knocks out all power. The engineer gives the Science officer the helm, and says he tell him when to ‘hit the engage.’. Then the Engineer removes some panels and works on the electronics of the command systems. They argue about his orders, but he then says, “hit it” (the engage) and the officer does. A few lights go on, and a moment passes before the ship’s engines kick in and the ship moves out faster than the em pulse.

Engineer makes the closing log, noting that they got all ship systems, including enigma, on line, and that the captain finally called him by name.

We see a Unity type starbase above a grey toned, mottled world. “Starbase 24" Ships, large and small, dock. The USS Justice is in a doc. Somebody is moving around stuff in the dark which looks like a 15 or 17 gallon Rubbermaid. The Dr. Using a hand scanner over a patient as the lights flip on and off. She presses his chest, then, as a beat turns to a drone, covers his head with a sheet. The white-haired captain is speaking, but we don’t hear him, we hear bagpipes. The small crew stands at attention.

The scene changes. A senior officer is ordering the USS Justice Science officer, Stoeffles, to take over some research by “Dr. Hopper”where he left off, and he is resisting. Dr. Hopper was the teacher and friend and shared his work with Stoeffles. He had an assistant, La Bouvier, but the assistant is still suspect. So, LaBouvier cannot be in charge. “The warp core breach has left a blemish on his reputation which is hard to ignore.” says the senior officer. The Stoeffles objects that LaBouvier was cleared of all responsibility and won’t like it that he is not promoted. The Sr. Officer says, “I don’t care if LaBouvier likes it or not, I’ll take care of him.”

We next see him communicating with Bouvier, who sarcastically says, “I’m sure Dr. Hopper would have wanted it that way...” and signs off, pissed. A woman is reading a book in the room. “They took it away from me,” he complains. He believes that Stoeffles is behind it, and has used his problem with the warp corp to get it. He says if Stoeffles says anything he’ll bust him in the mouth.

He is upset. Hoffler died of a mutated pneumonia virus which had invaded almost all of his cells. The wife is the doctor.

LaBouvier confronts Stoeffles, but the conversation is not what he expects. Stoeffles not only denies wanting the project, he was going to resign from Starfleet, and now he’s been blocked from that. He explains that he tried to get them to give it to LaBouvier.

Meanwhile the wife/Dr. Is going over Hopper’s files. She tells the captain that she wants to quarantine the ship and Starbase. He tells her to notify the starbase medical officer. They talk about the possible source of the virus, and she goes off the do more research.

Back with LaBouvier and Stoeffles, it becomes clear that Stoeffles is the stickler for protocol (he has already complained that the rest of the staff is late) about safety protocols when the experiment is conducted. LaBouvier denies that such regulations exist, but caves when Stoeffles shows them to him. LaBouvier starts to work, but collapses on the floor.

Dr. Sets aside the rule of treating he friend/husband and examines him due to her expertise in infectious diseases. She asks the computer for a list of viruses which cause humans to collapse suddenly, but it’s over 500. She now limits things to viruses that would have been exposed to Dr. Hopper. The symptoms of Dr. Hopper and DeBouvier are 60% consistent with a natural Alpha Centauri virus and 80% with a weaponized version. She orders the computer to run more tests and schedules an emergency meeting with the captain.

In the meeting, she expresses the opinion that they have been hit with a weaponized virus. She says the weaponized version spreads more easily than the natural, but it still can’t be airborne. It requires touch or ingestion.

The realize the weapon has to be placed in Engineering. A scan shows the entire Engineering section is infected, but particularly the panel that LaBouvier was working on when he collapsed.

Examined by the Dr., A crew member insisted he was fine, that he was immune from the virus. The Captain questioned how he could be immune to a bioweapon. Dr. Acknowledged that the crew member was evasive. The computer, meanwhile tells Stoeffles that the infested computer panel was manufactured on a Planet called Dagron 4. It is not connected with the Alpha Centauri Virus. There were four crew members on the delivery ship, all Starfleet. Stoeffles asks for names, and is interested in the answer.

Next we see the Dr. And Stoeffles reporting to the Captain about the bioweapon. The Dr. Is suspicious of the crew member, but the captain seems sure that the immunity is immaterial. Stoeffles has located a crew member on the deliver ship with a gripe against Hopper. The captain wants him brought in for questioning. The man is William Bosha, but the Dr. Says that he was friends with ‘Robert’ and would never do anything like that. She acknowledges she’s never met the man.

The Jr. Engineer checks on LaBouvier, but won’t let the Dr. take his blood to discover the source of his immunity. He says he has a phobia, he’s afraid of himself.

The questioned crew member seems to like ‘Rob’ and wants to talk to him, admits to delivering illegal weapons but not to the virus. He’s a navigator and has nothing to do with cargo. Captain suggests he could be telling the truth, and the panel was contaminated on the ship.

The Captain wanted the immune crew member to give a blood sample, and talks to him alone when he finds out the crew member refused. In private, he acknowledges the crew member was genetically engineered. They discuss the dangers of having his genetic records on file, and the Captain assures him the records will be destroyed after the crew members have been saved. The crew member agrees to the blood sample.

The captain explains to the Admiral why he has quarantined Star Base 24.

La Bouvier has become critical, and Stoeffles and the Dr. Discuss either giving him some of the genetically engineers crew member’s antibodies or trying to remove the viruses with the transporter. Dr. Likes the transporter idea. But before they can do anything, LaBouvier has cardiac arrest. The Dr. Can’t get the heart started again. But the transporter procedure worked, on Lt. Commander Litia, The captain orders Stoeffles to hand his findings to the new security chief. They both acknowledge the problem could be one of the crew.

The refit is complete on time, and the ship is ready to test the refit. The USS Justice leaves space dock.

Episode 3 “A Touch of Home”

Captain’s log. Lt. Preston says all leads are dead ends. Saboteur may not be a crew member. All members of his species must preform a reaffirmation ceremony.

Science officer has found appropriate planets, but they are too far away, or in Romulan space. The closest they can get to is 4 days away and in Klingon space.

My copy goes dark around 1:35-1:42. Captain seems to order the ship into Klingon Space and goes to his quarters. A panel in Klingon appears on a screen with a schematic of the USS Justice.

As credits are rolling the Doctor is offering a new treatment to a crew member who says he “has his own remedies.” The Captain enters. He tells them to be seated. He comments that they know his culture considers his religion very private, but he has to perform a very special ceremony on a special planet, so they are changing course to the planet T’Debt.

An officer objects that that is a Klingon world.

The captain acknowledges this but explains it’s the only one they can reach which is not in Romulan space.

A second officer, Mr. Stein, acknowledges that the Kittimer Accord is in effect, but that won’t stop groups which split from the Klingon government from attacking them.

The Captain agrees, and puts Stein in command during his absence.

Enigma objects. Chain of command give Stoeffles Command.

Stoeffles asks about getting their orders to leave their patrol space, and the Captain has gone through proper channels and gotten the leave of the Klingon government to enter their space.

The two other officers object, with Stein saying that that puts the ship in serious danger.

Captain reminds them the Klingons are now Federation allies. Any questions?

The Doctor wants to know about the ceremony he will be performing, and the other officer wants to know how it involves Stoeffles, but the Captain demurs, saying it is a private matter.

Stein takes command, and a bridge crew member reports strange censor readings from the planet.
Mr. Ways is asked to confirm, but he says censors must be off, there is nothing there now. They gather around Mr. Ways. Ways suggests it was a sensor ghost. He says he’ll contact engineering and have them run a full system diagnostic.

Stein wants the captain informed that they have entered standard orbit. The bridge crew member who spotted the anomaly objects that the captain should be informed, but Commander Stein says that it’s an equipment malfunction, and the captain doesn’t need to be troubled with that.

In the Captain’s quarters, Stoeffles looks troubled, and wants to know what this is all about. Captain explains he needs somebody close to him to perform the ritual, and so he chose his first officer. The captain Is almost a head shorter than Stoeffles. He informs Stein he’s beaming down.

The commander in charge of beaming them out suggests he keep his emergency locator so they can beam him out at any time just in case. The Captain, amused, asks, “Do you expect us to be attacked, commander?” Stoeffles says it’s a good idea.

Captain agrees, and expands that to ordering him to keep a transporter locked on them at all times, then waits to be beamed out, until they are.

The terrain is mountainous barren, and snow-covered. They materialize in a cave which pleases the captain, but Stoeffles says the cave is part of a larger cave system, and it’s minus 12 degrees Celsius in there. (25 degrees F.). Captain thinks nothing of it.

After 3 hours, several ships decloak to starboard, just as Stein is getting antsy about not hearing from the Captain. The ships fire on them, as the captain says “evasive, on screen.” (Nothing about raising shields?). The ships do not look like standard Klingon Birds of Prey.

The USS Justice is hit, shakes, and the navigator reports ‘shield down to 33 per cent, sir.” When Stein says, “report” the man at the science station says impatiently, ‘SIX unknown ships have decloaked and opened fire.” Stein asks, “ Are those ships capable of warp.” The substitute science officer says, “No, Sir.” Stein orders the navigator to ‘Take us out of the System.” The Navigator objects, “Sir, the Captain.” Stein says, “Now.” Navigator, “Yes, Sir.”

The USS Justice turns and goes to warp. The enemy ships cloak themselves again. Below, the Captain has completed his ceremony, and is packing up. Stoeffles suggests that , next time, the pick someplace warmer. Captain wants to complete packing and get out of there. When Stoeffles tries to call the USS Justice, he gets no answer. They agree to look for better shelter while they ‘puzzle it out.’

Back on the USS Justice, the ships, are identified as not Klingon or Romulan but which were using a Klingons cloaking device. Engineer suggests that they could identify their energy signature. Commander says to do it. Wood, the navigator, is claimed by the Engineer to help out. The Doctor reports most injuries were just from being knocked around during the battle. Engineers identifies the ships as Orion ships, consistent with reports of pirate attacks in this sector. The Navigator looks over the cloaking signature, and notes it’s not identical to Klingon signatures, just made to look like them. But the anomalous readings when they entered the system, which were from the location the Captain beamed down to, matched their signature. They return to the planet.

Scene switches to the Captain and Mr. Stoeffles. Stoeffles is freezing, although the cold doesn’t seem to bother the Captain. They have wondered inside an energy field and are now looking at a door to a sizable base. Captain wants to know if Stoeffles can open it. Stoeffles, freezing, says the thinks so.

Back on the ship, they have returned, and are now able to detect cloaked ships within 25km. They spot two, target them, and prepare to fire. The USS Justice fires as the ships decloak, destroying two and damaging two more. The small ships flee. The commander demands the wreckage be beamed into Cargo Bay 2 for examination. Then he orders that they locate the Captain and Mr. Stoeffles and beam them aboard. But they can’t detect them, they have entered the cloaked complex.

Below, the Captain and Mr. Stoeffles enter the complex, unaware that they are getting further from possible rescue. They scan the complex for life forms, finding several hundred Orions and six Romulans. They speculate about what the Romulans are doing, and decide they probably want to disrupt Klingon-Federation trade. They head for the control center.

On the ship, the Engineer and his staff scan the debris, but the Engineer is already sure that it’s Klingon. He insists the Klingons entered into a treaty just to lure the Federation into a false sense of security. However, scans show the signature matches recent Romulan technology, not Klingon technology.

The Captain and Mr. Stoeffles approach the center of the complex, hiding behind boxes to stay out of sight when Orions pass. They reach some tech stations, but hear people approaching. Stoeffles works to gather data while the Captain investigates those approaching.

On the USS Justice, they scan for fuel emissions, since the Orion ships aren’t as fuel efficient as Romulans ships would be. They locate and attack four more ships.

Below, Stoeffles is captured by the Orions. But the Orion who grabs his recorder tells his fellow to give it to their own captain, not the Romulans. The other Orion still brings it to the Romulan, who realizes it will be Commander Stoeffles, and addresses him by name. He wants to know why he and the USS Justice are there. For no apparent reason, Stoeffles says they were making snow angles, and is beaten. But the Captain comes out of hiding with a phaser, and knocks the unsuspecting Orions out, while the Romulan demands they drop shields, and beams up. The Orion who is not knocked out calls him a coward.

On the USS Justice, they note a shadow fleeing and that the shield is down and they can get a lock on the Captain and Commander Stoeffles. The Commander orders they shoot at the fleeing Romulans first, and the Romulans decloak, but continue to flee toward Romulan space.

The Captain and Stoeffles are surrounded by Orions, but are beamed out just in time.

The Engineer wants to know how the ceremony went. The Captain responds, it was like “A Touch of Home.”

The Engineer traps Stoeffles and asks what happened. Stoeffles says, “After four years of knowing him, all I found out was his name is Sneg.” The Engineer responds, “Sneg?”

The Captain returns to his command chair, and it is surrendered to him. He notes that they are sending reports to the Klingon embassador and their Federation commanders. He is confident their involvement will cause the Romulans to rethink their involvement in Klingon Space.

However, even as the USS Justice pulls away, a Romulan ship decloaks.

Thanks to Michael Hudson of Star Trek: Intrepid for pointing to this film, which is not really so much a Star Trek fan film as a curiosity.

This film is fun and engaging. It starts out by stealing a real TOS episode, but then turns it into its own thing... and steals from a few other TOS episodes! I enjoyed the whole very earthy and realistic interaction between the Turkish hobo who is a character out of 19th Century fiction... maybe the 18th century... and the Star Trek environment. There are some sets which blend in so well you don't realize they've switched to sets from the real ancient ruins which dot the Turkish countryside until a secret door opens. I don't think there is any other Star Trek film where any character keeps asking questions of Allah and thanking Allah. It sets the stage, is well written, well acted, funny. There is an unimportant weakness in the transporter effects. Frankly, I didn't care a bit. The real problem with this film has is the editing, and that problem is severe. It's MUCH too long. For the first half hour I thought I had a 5, but by the end I was wondering if it should be rated a 3. It also is weak on the suspension of disbelief. (I'm not sure it's any worse than the Harry Mud episodes.) It doesn't make a point. But by mixing an old fashioned unlucky screw up with the Enterprise crew, it's fun. Because of the fact that it's just plain fun, it scratches out a rating of a solid 3.5 or just barely 4.

Side questions: Is this the first time live action TOS was recast in a full length episode?

The second film (Incident at Beta 9) deals with the Klingon problem and an new energy vortex that forms when planet Odin II vanishes and almost destroys the USS Aristarchus in the process! The third film: ("The Final Darkness") reveals the answers to the energy gates and what caused Odin II' to vanish. This second of three, pre-Enterprise Fan Film explains the physical changes in the Klingons.

Rating: 4. This show starts and ends with a complete list of credits, instead of just giving us the main names up front and the production crew and supporting role in the back. Except for Captain Navarro, we also get absolutely no identification of who is who. Helen Kayaian is Commander Navarro. But I’d be guessing about anyone else, and the one guess I already made, I was told by Mr. Kayaian, was wrong. Not the first time I've ever been wrong...

This is essentially an excellent show. It well written, well acted. The sets do the job, as do the special effects. The CGI is not professional quality, but it gets you there. It makes good use of the oak-hickory forests in and around Long Island, as well as the beaches and lakes for the outdoor off-world scenes. It is entertaining and well directed. It is also tightly edited. It not only provides a low level of suspension of disbelief, it attempt to deal with one of the gaping holes in the Trek cannon. I confess that, as New Yorker who has never before heard my native accent on a Trek film, I was delighted to hear a little New York in this one.

I did not hear anything that I would call a real-world idea that it explores, social scientific or political. It seemed to have two entirely unrelated stories. However, it did attempt to address a huge hole in the Trek Canon. Although the quality of the sound and picture were never so poor for so long that you had no idea what was going on, it was poor enough to detract significantly from the enjoyment of the film.

This is Part 2 in a three part series. It could be once I’ve seen parts 1 and 3 I’ll see how the two apparently unrelated stories are connected... if they are. For now, though, that, also, weighs down this excellent effort. If the other parts of this story explain a connection, and Mr. Kayaian has a higher quality video with better sound he can make available for download, this could easily be upgraded to a 4.5 or, if some kind of scientific or social commentary comes out from the overall effort, even a 5. With better quality sound and picture this could be a Quick Pick Treasure. However, I did not wait for the release of higher quality video and sound, or for the other two films, to be honest, because I heard this was a great show (and it was) and I just needed to watch some really good Trek. I watched it, and it was, indeed, really good Trek. Here are links to the current version. Mr. Kayaian has told me an upgraded version, as well as both of the other two films, are in the works.

Film repeatedly has white vertical markings as if scratched. Also, it is somewhat fuzzy.

We approach Beta 9, a blue-red planet. We see a Starfleet shuttlecraft on a rock surface under and earth-like partially cloudy sky. A log by Lt. Thomas Roth. He was on a routine survey mission with another man when a severe ion storm hit. Sound is blurry. Picture is blurry. They want to complete their mission on the Planet’s surface and meet the U.S.S. Hannibal in two days. The U.S.S. Hannibal is named, presumably, for the Carthaginian famous for attacking Rome by bringing Elephants into Italy over the Alps. On the planet, We see three disks in the sky, one rocky earth moon-like one blue and light blue, one blue and reddish. The two men have yellow and blue shirts on, with TOS-era look. Star Fleet insignia. The Blue shirt says damn, and explains that their initial scan shows the planet is made of what sounded to me to be Calvinite, but Mr. Kayaian has told me is Kelbanite, a mineral described in TNG,) and other refractory metals. They play havoc with his tricorder. All he can scan ahead is 20 meters. The blue shirt’s name is Dan. (Again Mr. Kayaian says Dan Sagan, like the Cosmos guy... billions and billions...). With the blurry sound, I wasn't sure of the name. Lt. Tom Roth tells him that whatever data they gather is fine, it’s just a preliminary survey. Dan points out that their commander demands thoroughness. Then he asks, since the world is just on the Federation side of the Neutral Zone, are they really on a scientific mission, or are they there to find Klingons? Tom gives an ambiguous answer. (Maybe both?)

We see a black spaceship with a small saucer section and a large central tube between the Nacelles. It is a freighter carrying a medicine which cures Addle’s Disease. The captain notes that, without those supplies, the plague will kill the entire colony within a month. (One has to wonder why, with replicator technology, transportation of any chemical would be needed. This is, however, a Trek staple, not of Mr. Kayaian’s making. Mr. Kayaian has also been kind enough to inform me that the name of this ship is The Aristarchus.). The captain of the Aristarchus has a horn, and his blue-shirted MD, a woman, notes that they are close to the neutral zone where a Klingon could fire on them. It will be 3.4 hours before they are out of the sector, another crew member answers. The objecting blue-shirted officer is addressed by the Captain as Ms Wayne. They will meet the Wellington in 10 hours. The communications officer picks up signals on a Klingon transmission band. Doctor Wayne “Knew it.” The communications officer can translate only a few pieces, something about a scientist. The transmissions are from the Deathwind, a Klingon warship. The Captain notes that that is Gen. Krikor’s Ship. He wonders what the general is doing out there. The Doctor. worries, “This can’t be good.” That’s all the communications officer got, but she’ll keep monitoring. The doctor worries, while the Captain is curious about the Klingons.

We see two Klingon ships, one fires on the other. The Klingon in one ship look like a TOS Klingon, the Klingon in the other ship look like a TNG Klingon (Mr. Kayaian refers to this as a "movie" Klingon, but I will continue to refer to him as the TNG Klingon). Neither ship is a warbird. The TOS era Klingon appears to the one one fleeing, and he heads down for the surface of a planet. The TNG era Klingon appears triumphant. The TNG Klingon fires again, hitting the TOS Klingon. The TOS Klingon’s control panel emits smoke. TOS enters the planetary atmosphere, and glows red-hot in an effect which is quite good. All these on sets and models, not green screens and CGI. The TOS ship is glowing red hot and leaving reddish smoke behind him in the atmosphere. He sees the surface coming up ahead of him on his view screen.

Star Trek: Incident at Beta 9-Part 2 of 6(8:06)

Beginning of Part II
Again, the meteor-like hot head and smoke trail of the TOS Klingon ship in the atmosphere. Dan and Tom, the Federation/human survey party, see the ship coming down. Their tricorder still doesn’t work, but Dan thinks it’s a ship. The TOS Klingon races down a hill followed by the TNG Klingon, with a big knife or short sword. When the TNG era Klingon catches up, the screen gets too dark for us to follow the action, but we hear the noise, and in less than a minute we see the TOS era Klingon fall, bloodied, to the ground. But he continues to flee, and be pursued, with the TNG Klingon hitting him again and again. He does not seem to strike back at all. But after rolling down a hill, he gets on his feet, and flees along a lake and back up into the woodland hills. The TNG era Klingon reaches the lake by sliding down the hill, but looks confused and weary.

Back in space, we see the medical supply ship. They have unusual readings, and seem to be approaching a blue vortex in space. An female officer, “Mr. Roberts” identifies it as some specific kind of field (I couldn’t make out the name) of ?? intensity. Again, I couldn’t make out the words. However, the acting makes up for the bad sound, we know they are in trouble. The helmsman can’t break free of it. Roberts says the pressure on the hull is increasing, and the Captain directs an distress signal on all channels. The ship is being pulled into a bright red fire-like (or sun-like) wall. The ship is smoking inside. They are being pulled into the vortex, and Roberts cries out readings of plus 5... plus 7... plus 9... her tone tells us this is very bad. The captain calls for power, Roberts reports they are approaching critical. The Captain says they can’t get out the top, can they get out of the bottom. Roberts says they can’t break the laws of physics, and the captain suggests they are in a situation where they aren’t sure what those are. The captain directs that they direct power INTO the vortex instead of fighting it. Roberts says they’ll be crushed, but has no alternative idea. They head in. Captain demands Engineering stabilize all systems as they fail, as the collapse of shields and other systems is reported. Out in 15 seconds. In the end, they have serious structural damage, but are intact. The captain checks with Dr. Wayne, who reports no deaths, 63 injuries, 20 serious. The rest can be back to work in 10 minutes. Engineering and transporter were seriously damaged. Some of Engineering is flooded with radiation. He’s using force fields to reinforce the hull. The captain says that’s a good idea, and tells him to grab his men and fix it. Captain wants Robert’s report. She tells him that the vortex is constantly shifting, and in their current shape, they’ll be crushed immediately. And they don’t have enough power to fly out of there.

Down on Beta 9, Tom and Dan continue to wonder toward the downed Klingon ship, more or less unaware of any danger. When they come to a hill, Tom orders that they split up and meet on the far side to cover more ground. Dan rightly points out the danger. But, they have no working tricorders, and they are searching. They will remain in constant contact via communicator. They will search until dark. Dan says, “Be Careful Lt,” He responds, “To Boldly Go...”

Star Trek: Incident at Beta 9-Part 3 of 6(9:48)

Beginning of Part 3. When I watched this it wasn’t loaded quite right. You couldn’t pause it.
Recap of the last minute of Part 2. Sun shines through the trees, show the TNG Klingon, and both starfleet officers in the forest and clearings. We see the sun setting. We see Starfleet’s Tom, then gets a call from Dan, he found the ship, it was a complete wreak. Small, Klingon, couldn’t hold more than two. Tom is attacked by the TNG Klingon. He subdues Tom. Dan doesn’t stay where he is, but follows his Tricorder signal. He finds the TOS Klingon Collapsed, He flips the TOS Klingon over, but he doesn’t move at first. Dan builds a fire. The TOS era Klingon is surprised that Dan is honoring their treaty. He identifies himself... he is Krenak, Imperial Scientist. Dan says he doesn’t know what is happening. He knows Krenak is in Federation space, and so he will be questioned by the Federation, and then handed over to the Klingons. Krenak is being hunted by another Klingon, he crossed the neutral zone to tell the Federation what is going on. The Klingon empire is in a civil war. The Klingon race the Federation knows is being wiped out. What do you know of Klingon history? Klingons are two different species. They divided the planet into Northern and Southern provinces. Northerners had ridges and great physical strength, Southerners had brains. When Kaless arrived something this division was all but done. Couldn't hear exactly what he said.

Star Trek: Incident at Beta 9-Part 4 of 6(10:02)

Beginning of Part 4 Also doesn’t stop properly.

Both fought for survival and dominance. Like Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal. (Since Cro-Magnon is an old usage for early modern humans in Europe, this is unlikely language use 250 years from now.) Each part divided the land. I couldn’t make out the actual names, but Mr. Kayaian has told me that the ridged Northern Klingons are Moch Klingons. The flat-faced TOS-era Southerner Klingons are VeS. By the time of Kaless, the VeS were conquered. Even so, it was the VeS that conquered the stars, they fought the Romulans and Federation while the Moch ran the home world. Then the VeS were hit by an illness. The Moch were immune to the disease. All off-world VeS were spared. The Moch decided they were weak and small in number and decided to wipe them out. The scene switches.

Tom wakes up with the TNG Klingon, in the ship of the TNG Klingon. We soon learn he is General Krikor who has not made any scans. He refuses to explain himself. Tom suggests that he refuses to talk to because he’s afraid. General Krikor thought Tom was talking to the TOS Klingon, Krenak, not Dan. Tom tells him that holding him gives him no honor, and General Krikor says humans don’t know anything about honor. Tom breaks out, knocks Krikor over, and runs.

The Aristarchus is in a hole in the vortex which is where a planet was. They are expected to be swept in within three hours. Captain gives Roberts an hour to find a way out.

At the campfire, we hear Krenak say that The Moch decided to eliminate the VeS and the VeS tried to create a eugenics program to become as strong as the Moch. They got the idea from the Earth Eugenics Wars. Dan hears from Tom and they both head for the shuttle. Krenak tries to get Dan to give him his weapon. Dan doesn’t. They all head for the shuttle.

Back on the Aristarchus, the medical supply ship, the only people who might hear their distress call are the Klingons.

Star Trek: Incident at Beta 9-Part 5 of 6(9:55)

Beginning of Part 5.

On the ship, Roberts has a theory that could result in a course out of the vortex. But not quite, with the available power they could get to the edge, but they would need another ship with a tractor beam to take them the last little way out. The Captain addresses the crew, says they have all served with distinction and honor, but he’s asking even more of them, blah blah... captain out. They try to get out, everything is at maximum and they could blow up at any time. They shake. Integrity field is compromised, there is severe turbulence ahead. They call engineering. There is smoke throughout the ship. The captain looks like he’s bracing himself for the worst, as the communications officer tries desperately to reach anyone at all. Systems are failing all over the ship. Smoke and shaking. Roberts says almost there, but they are falling back in. They are falling back in. Pressure is increasing, 10,000 PSI, 12,000 PSI. Communications reaches the USS Hannibal. A woman in command (Later identified as “Captain Navarro”) says, ‘sit tight we are coming to get you.’ The Medical ship Captain says, let’s not take any chances, all power to the engines. We see the medical supply ship, and they are out of the vortex. No more space pressure on the hull. The captain orders the crew to relax and orders Romulan ale from the bar. We see the Hannibal with it’s single nacelle and the medical supply ship next to each other in space. The Horned Medical ship captain says, “Thanks for the tow, Captain Navarro.” She says, “My pleasure, Captain.” She will escort him to a space station which has already been told to expect they need repairs. She’ll be heading to Beta 9 to rescue two of her officers stranded by an ion storm. (The horned captain is Captain McNair. Got to wonder about how the folk over at Star Trek: Intrepid would feel about that...). On the planet, we see Tom running with the red sunset in the background. We hear Tom’s personal log, “Our situation has become critical.” Dan and Krenak are also making headway on rocky soil. We see General Krikor stalking them all. Tom runs, while Krikor walks along a beach. We see the Krenak explaining that they have dormant DNA which shows both groups of Klingons were once one species. The Moch found a new strain of the disease to wipe them out, so the VeS activated the ancient DNA to become one race with the Moch, and be free of the disease. Their greatest warriors all underwent the procedure to be altered. But the civilians were another matter. They were forced or ‘vanished.’ He fled when it was his turn to undergo the procedure, so General Krikor himself has pledged to kill him. At this moment, Krikor appears and says, “And I shall kill you.” Dan holds his phaser, but hesitates to shoot it. The Krenak glances down the hill.

Star Trek: Incident at Beta 9-Part 6 of 6(9:46)

Beginning of Part 6

Krenak demands that Dan shoot General Krikor. When Dan continues to hesitate, Krenak strikes Dan in the face and grabs the Phaser. He laughs as he points it, advancing toward the Krikor. Dan hangs over a cliff. The Krenak says, “With your death comes my freedom.” But the phaser doesn’t work. He tries to readjust it to no avail. They fight, Krenak unarmed, the Krikor with a short sword. Dan struggles to get up on the cliff, and looks down at the beach below him. Tom comes running. We see the Krikor getting the best of Krenak in the fight. Dan has himself half pulled up the cliff. The ground starts to give way, and Tom Roth grabs his hand and hauls him up. The Klingon fight continues, with the Krenak flinging dirt at Krikor. Krikor kills Krenak, then lets out the death howell, and runs off. He grabs his short sword, and heads back. Tom and Dan face the Krikor who is running toward them, bearing the sword. Tom retrieves a phaser, and denies he was working with Krenak. The Krikor says Tom will shoot him in the back. Tom says no, but you’ve violated the treaty, but fulfilled your blood oath. Now, leave Federation Space. That would be the honorable thing to do. The Krikor pounds his chest. He picks up his short sword. Dan say, “General, your people are self-destructing.” he says that genetic engineering will destroy them. The General says that Krenak was a liar and a murderer, so ‘forget what you heard.’ He then leaves. Dan asks what to do with the body. Krikor says, “It’s only an empty shell. Treat it as such.” Dan wonders who are the real Klingons.

Dan wants to know why Tom let him go. Tom shows him that the Kelbanite stops the Phaser from working. They bury Krenak. Dan repeats what the scientist says, “There will come a time when you will never look upon my kind again.” Tom says, “I don’t think he’d appreciate the sentiment.” Dan responds, “It’s the human thing to do.”

We see the USS Hannibal in orbit. Commander Navarro says, “Maintain standard orbit, Mr..” “Aye aye sir.”

Back on the planet, we see Tom and Dan. They communicate with the captain, report they completed their mission and learned more than expected. The captain says, “Well Done.” We’ll meet you back at the Shuttle. Roth out.” The Commander orders they prepare a landing party.

Back on the planet, We see Dan and Tom discuss whether or not they like the planet. Credits roll.

Well Written, well acted. I have to say that the special effects are only adequate, due to the age of the film. It's entertaining, well directed, well edited. No point, but what do you want in under six minutes?

Reviewed and Discussed: The Trek Twelve Days of Christmas 2009, Day 5, 5 Star Trek Fan Films

The Brave and the Valiant (6:59) Rating: 3. The writing is minimal, the acting and use of sets are good, especially for the time this film was made. It is only slightly entertaining, but well directed and edited. It's 7 minutes long, and that includes over a minute on credits, so no point.

The Intrepid Finale was inspired by the Doomsday Machine episode. In fact the line at the end is derived from the end of that episode. Other clips are from The Ultimate Computer episode. I wanted to see several ships attacking as in that show.

The Brave & the Valiant was more drama based. I built a basic interior shuttle in my garage, and set fire to it with fireworks. This wasn't dramatic enough, so effects were animated over the top using Photoshop. I didn't have any CGI software at the time... If you wish to link to my two main web pages you can:

This episode is so much better than the first one it's hard to believe the same people did it. It was also nice to see a crossover with George Kayaian (of The Multiverse Crisis) making a guest appearance as an Admiral. I love fan film crossovers! I see a credit to Romulan Wars as well. Thanks to to all for an enjoyable episode!

HISTORY OF BASTARDS OF KIRK

Bright Anvil Studios approached Writer/Director Maninder Chana in 2006, about doing CD cover design for a six-hour audio sci-fi series, Sectarian Wave (http://www.virtuallyaudio.com/radio-sectarian-wave.asp). Although they didn't end up using the design, that first meeting led to comic book illustrator and toy designer Logan Lubera asking for help in producing Bastards of Kirk. Chana and his producing partner at the time Bob Thompson wrote a script that slowly started growing in length given the scope of the Star Trek series. BOK was shot over a number days over the course of a month. The backdrops were built in the Bright Anvil Studio and also included location shooting in and around Toronto. The fan film debuted at the Toronto Comic Con in the fall of 2006. It has gone on to play at a number of big comic conventions and has become a cult favourite amongst comic and sci-fi geeks alike. Four years later, we are still receiving requests to show it at various festivals.

41 Goatboy Films has produced two Black and White Fan Films, (I include one green screen original picture) Pike era.

The first is the first in what may become a series called, "Star Trek: Alpha Strike" The episode is named, "Beauty of the Razor", Black and White. This is a strait action/adventure film.

This Sims-based animation of Star Trek: The Original Series is a big step up from Ericka DeBenedictis's earlier Star Trek Animations. Primarily set on earth, she has not yet developed good backgrounds which look like Trek, but her writing and use of characters and of uniforms is much improved. This is a very female take on TOS, and addresses many of my own objections to that series.
