(101) Star Trek: Hidden Frontier Fan Film series

A thank you to John Whiting for his corrections, set out  in his comment, which, since I have moved this listing, is now at the bottom of it as part of the listing, not as a comment.

Overview, impressions. The initial episodes are more poorly acted than the later ones, and the green screen technology used instead of sets is a distraction, but this is a serious attempt at a TV series set in the Silver Age of Star Trek.

The series improved significantly when David Dial assigned himself to the space station and he spent more time directing and less time trying to direct himself. Few people can do both, and he should be proud of his directorial efforts.  Pros rarely do both.

The series creates its own set of villains, and expands on minor ones mentioned in Official Trek.

The relationships all feel awkward, although the Gay relationships which start in the third and forth season seem less awkward than the strait ones. All the women except the Betazoid counselor are aggressive and demanding, and the gay guys are all just lovely. Although Hidden Frontier speaks of itself as being about GLBT, only the personal life of one person, a gay male, is really explored.

There are a number of obese people in command. This seems as unreal as the attitude of being flattered and reconsidering how they feel about their sexuality that many of the characters who are not gay have to the advances of a gay man. In real life, there are obese people and short people at the top of organizations, but they are usually organizations that they either built or inherited. The fact is the same people who were popular in their high school tend to do well in large organizations. They look good and manipulate and lie well.

There are bisexual people who try to decide which way to go. But most people just are what they are. Although the sex is gp 13 rated, or even g rated, the social interactions are as fanciful for gays as James T. Kirk getting all the alien babes was in TOS, and has the sense of reality that Ricker had in TNG... that's to say, unrealistic feeling and annoying.

The following Comments were made before HF Fan Film Series was moved to this location:
henglaar said...

I am unaware of who John Caves is supposed to be, as there is no one of that name in our production. Rob Caves is our series creator and producer.

David Dial played "Ian Knapp" (twin brother of "John Knapp" in a previous fan film).

And I, John Whiting, did makeup and played Dr. Henglaar, but directed only two episodes.
The very large output of the Hidden Frontier group is not approached, let alone equaled by any other fan film group for many years.

As of 2015, two groups, Potemkin Pictures and Star Trek Unity have produced enough Star Trek Fan Films that their output can be said to compare with Hidden Frontier.  Still, neither has equaled or topped their output even in 2015.
